What is the first thing that comes to your mind when we say CAKE? It’s not about what comes in your mind but what comes out of your mouth! Yes, we’re drooling too.
Cakes are the most important guests of any celebration, be it a birthday party, an anniversary or a graduation party! No party ever starts without one. Since the cake is going to be the center of attention at a party, its flavour and decoration are the two most important aspects. A good baker should know how to bake as well as present his masterpiece in the most beautiful way he can! There has been an ongoing trend called “Naked Cake” in the baking world. We’re here to tell you what this trend is all about and how to make a naked cake for yourself!
What is a naked cake?
A cake that is completely bare and has no fancy decoration on it is called a naked cake! You heard us right! There is no frosting swirls or colourful piping. Here’s what you’re imagining right now “A plain golden and brown sponge” and all we have to say to you is that you are correct because it is what it is! However, the flavour of the cake is more appealing than its outer layer. These cakes are designed as layer cakes and consist of thick buttercream or chocolate ganache filling. If there wasn’t a layer as thick, then the interior of the cake would be fully exposed!
Let your cake speak for itself and here’s how:
Run to your kitchen and gather the following ingredients:
FOR THE CAKE
1 1/2 c. (3 sticks) butter, softened
2 1/4 c. granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract
3 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. cornstarch
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. kosher salt
1 1/4 c. milk
FOR THE BUTTERCREAM
1 1/2 c. (3 sticks) butter, softened
6 c. powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
6 tbsp. heavy cream
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
Your turn to bake the magic!
Start off by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and line three 8 inch round cake pans with butter paper or parchment paper. Grease the pans with cooking spray or oil. Once you’re done with that, use a hand mixer and beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a large bowl. Add eggs one by one while you’re at it! Pour vanilla essence and mix until it is completely combined.
Get your hands on another large bowl and whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt. Remember to sprinkle only the required amount of salt! Next, add half dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and keep beating until combined and mixed well. Pour in milk and mix to blend the ingredients. Add the remaining dry ingredients and stir until rightly combined.
After you’re done with mixing, it’s time to divide the batter evenly between cake pans and bake! Let the cakes be in the oven till the time a toothpick inserted comes out clean. It should be done in 30 minutes. Let it cool for 15 minutes in the pan and then transfer it to a cooling rack.
In another large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter until it’s fluffy enough. Add sugar and beat until combined, then add vanilla, cream and salt. Keep beating until you think it’s ready to decorate the cake!
Frost your cake!
– Cut the cake tops so they are levelled after that, cut each cake into half.
– Pipe a ring of buttercream around the edge of the bottom layer and then fill in the centre.
– Add the second layer of cake on top and repeat the process.
– After all the layers are done, refrigerate the beauty for 15 minutes.
– Once 15 minutes are up, add a thin layer of buttercream around the cake so you can still see the edge of the sponge cake slightly.
– Let that cake chill in the fridge for another 15 minutes.
– Your cake is ready to be devoured by your friends and family!
Tips to keep in mind while baking a naked cake:
– Master the art of properly greasing the pan.
– Extra icing on the cake is always a safer option as the cake may dry out.
– If you’re saving it for later, keep the finished cake in an airtight container
Now, for the most important tip:
– Have fun! Go crazy with the decoration, there are no rules! You can even decorate the cake with berries and fruits.
