causes and symptoms of Arthritis

Arthritis refers to the pain in joints that increases and ceases to go away even after taking pain killers. The pain is often accompanied by fever, fatigue and appetite loss. It is one of the most common diseases across the globe and can lead to joint deformities, if not attended to in time. The unbearable pain is because of fluid collection around the joints that puts intense pressure on them. It is of two types, namely – Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Ayurveda recognizes it as a disease caused by imbalanced Vata (air) dosha.

Let us begin by learning about the types, causes and symptoms of Arthritis.

Arthritis – Causes and Symptoms

The disease leads to the deposition of fluid around the joints, which puts intense pressure on them and leads to pain. Two types of Arthritis are – Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Generally these 2 are recognized as non-treatable, but Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis treatment in ayurveda offers the best solutions and healing practices for it. If it is addressed in time, your disease can be controlled and cured permanently as well.

Ayurveda identifies Arthritis as a Vata (air) dosha malady that can be cured permanently if addressed in time. Imbalance in the Pitta element leads to impaired digestion and the food breakdown process is not complete. This food gets deposited over time and releases different toxins that travel to the entire body along with the nutrients. Over time, this impairs the metabolism and the healthy cells don’t get proper blood and nourishment, causing tissue damage.

The toxins get deposited in the body in a layer Ama. In the case of Rheumatoid Arthritis, the Ama gets deposited in the joints.

The treatment of Arthritis comes under the Sandhi Chikitsa category of Ayurveda. The inflammation around the joints damages the cartilage and leads to immense pain, joint stiffness and sounds. The patients with Osteoarthritis experience inflammation and sounds in the synovial area (joint), while those of Rheumatoid Arthritis experience inflammation and joint stiffness.

Apart from these two common types, Ayurveda recognizes some other types of Arthritis or Vatarakta, namely – Osteoporosis, and Spondyloarthritis (Spinal) Arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Causes:

As per Ayurveda, Rheumatoid Arthritis is caused by an excessive intake of saline, sour, pungent, hot, alkaline and uncooked foods. Excessive intake of oil-cake food items, radish, and foods causing a burning sensation when they are digested also cause it. Some other food items linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis include excessive curd, sugarcane, sesame paste, Aranala, Sauvira, alcohol, wine and simultaneous consumption of contradictory foods. This is why the Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis focuses on diet, lifestyle changes and herbal administration.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms:

Apart from joint pain, inflammation and stiffness, the other symptoms include fever, lethargy, anorexia, altered taste, heaviness and weakness in the body, body aches, burning sensations and increased thirst.

Osteoarthritis Causes:

Osteoarthritis is linked to bad food habits, wrong lifestyle habits, genetic predisposition and an unhealthy diet, etc. In young people, this disease is linked to obesity, sedentary and inactive lifestyle, eating contradictory food items together, previous body injuries, allergies and stress.

Osteoarthritis Symptoms:

Osteoarthritis is characterized by inflammation in joints along with sounds in the synovial cavity. Pain and inflammation in this disease are related to weather and can become severe with age or weather etc. Joints crackle and become tender to touch. The patients can also experience bumps on the finger or any bony outgrowth on their fingers or toes. If the condition is not addressed properly, it can also lead to limping or joint deformity. Hence, the Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis focuses on many aspects other than medicines, such as massages and an oil-deficient diet.

Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis

Ayurveda school of thought moves along this fact – your body becomes what you eat. So, every disease and disorder originates in the Jathar or stomach (digestive system). Because of this fact, the Ayurvedic treatment for Arthritis focuses on diet, lifestyle changes and medicinal administration. Osteoarthritis patients are given various herbal oils and are prescribed an oil-rich diet by the Ayurvedic practitioners. However, Rheumatoid Arthritis patients are prescribed an oil deficient diet.

Every Ayurvedic practitioner has a different routine for the Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis. There are different packages of different duration such as 14/21/28 days, depending on the extent of disease and patient preferences. The Ayurvedic practitioners employ various remedial therapies such as Abhyangam, Elakizhi, Januvasti, Podikizhi, Manalkizhi, Kadikizhi and Ama Pachan. These remedial therapies are chosen depending on the type of Arthritis.

All the treatments start with body cleansing and purifying procedures that boost the working of the immune system. This cleansing gets rid of the deposited toxins in the body tissues and organs. These toxins are a result of the wrong eating and lifestyle habits of the patient. Only after the body is free from such toxins, it gets ready to process the medicines. During this step, the body is prepared for the Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis. The patient is kept on a simple and nutritious diet during this time.

Further accompaniments of this step and the entire Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis include Yoga, Asanas and meditation. There are many Ayurvedic Resorts and Healthcare centres in Kerala spread over a large area that offers all these facilities in a calm and peaceful environment. The patients enjoy a curative atmosphere and get treated for their diseases at such centres.

The Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis varies across the patients and also depends on the age of the patients. Different herbal oils, concoctions and medicines are prescribed to patients of different ages. Even the body constitution and disposition matter while choosing the herbal oils and treatment procedures. Hence, the oil used for an overweight person varies from the one being used for an elderly patient. Thus, the Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis is completely customized and tailored for every single patient.

The oil massages might not be suitable for patients in advanced stages of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Hence, they undergo other therapies, such as Udgharshanam and Manalkizhi.

The patients don’t have to stay for a long duration if their schedule doesn’t allow it. They can opt for packages with a shorter duration as suitable to them. The results vary from one patient to another and the disease requires different time for a cure. Ayurveda treatments and procedures for Arthritis work on the causative factors and tackle the disease from its roots. While some patients might feel that allopathic pain killers and medicines are better pain solutions, these medicines don’t work on the causative factors of Arthritis. Hence, Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis is the best way to tackle it.

Ayurveda is the complete system of medicine and focuses on the root of all diseases. This is why all the treatment procedures start from body cleansing and purification. This prepares the body for the actual treatment and herbal administration. So, choose Ayurveda treatment for Arthritis for complete and long-lasting relief from Arthritis, and mark a wonderful start to a healthy lifestyle.
